Each year brings a new. New season, new growth, new life, and often new seeds to cultivate. Each year I enjoy participating in local seed exchanges. These events are a great change of pace from solely relying on ordering from seed catalogs in the “off” season. Although I also enjoy the colorful reprieve arriving in my mailbox to ogle at the possibility in the garden.

If ever you are in a position to participate in a local seed exchange this is a great time to meet and greet with fellow gardeners. Often these types of groups can be found through the local library or social media community pages. These events are sure to have high chances of locally adapted seeds that perform well in your area and often have been saved for many seasons. These types of heirloom exchanges can be a wealth of conversation and genetic exchange, that isn’t available through the commercial exchange. Although it is greatly appreciated you bring seeds to exchange, most events do not require you to have something to exchange.

Winter is also a great time to put some consideration into what kinds of goals you have for the upcoming season. I try to compile these ideas into a sketchbook, and then give each one space in the garden. This blueprint of a concept often changes when the time comes to plant seeds into the ground, or replant if seeds don’t germinate as planned.
Happy gardening in the upcoming season!
